CHAPTER 5
The meeting proved more difficult to arrange than was originally thought and after it had been postponed three times, Enid insisted that Susan have no further contact with him until he could meet the rest of her family.
Exactly what the problem was; was hard to pin down. Enidâs questions about his own family received the vaguest answers. His mother was dead, having died so long ago that he had no memory of her. He was an only child and lived with his father. Susan had not met Michaelâs father, but this was not surprising, as they had only met a short time ago.
The impasse continued, and Susan resented not being able to see him. The arrangement was that he would let them know by post when he was arriving to see them.
In the meantime, Rosaâs constant cough had turned into consumption and she had gone to a sanatorium in the country in hope of a cure. It was saddening to all of them, being without her.
Enid was especially bereft; Rosa had been a tower of strength, even when bedridden she was the person to go to for advice for almost any problem. Being the head of the house for the first time was almost frightening, especially now she was no longer here to discuss Susanâs man friend. Enid only realized now, how much she had relied on her.
Worse still, Enid feared that Rosaâs absence left Susan with dangerous time on her hands. To guard against this, Enid made Susan promise to Rosa, when on a visit to the sanatorium, that she would not see Michael against their wishes. Susan had given her word, and as she was a scrupulously honest girl, Enid felt reassured.
Eventually, word came that Michael would visit the following Sunday afternoon, straight after Mass. This was the first they had heard he was Catholic, even Susan hadnât known. But he was, after all, Irish. Rosa might not have been pleased about this latest fact, but Enid felt unconcerned. Her lack of interest in things religious meant that she had developed no prejudices about them; if anything, the news that he was a practicing Catholic tended to reassure her of his honesty.
When the day arrived preparations were in full sway. Susan, at least had some idea of what foods he liked, and every effort was made to get everything just right. Both girls had become good cooks, and the three of them worked in harmony to produce the best Sunday lunch ever.
Since Rosaâs illness, Susan had become the main cook of the family. She seemed to be one of those people who are good at anything they do, and because she was so sensible and practical from an early age, she had perhaps, been given more freedom than other girls her age. She had, for instance, been allowed to go to
